Recommended this month (for little ones)

Wake Up Me!   What a charming book! Whether giggling, eating, dressing, or getting ready to play, this toddler is wide awake and wants the whole world to be awake too! It's fun to feel the energy build as the story moves along...through all the reassuring morning routines. Add to that the lovely watercolor/pastel illustrations of a family awakening, and you've got yourself a book you'll read again and again!

Recommended this month (for early readers)

Ebb & Flo   This absolutely cuddly story is a hit at Hedgehog! In the words of one of the children in our test audience, "What a GREAT BOOK! It almost brought tears to my eyes!"

Friendship is the key here...and we are completely charmed by Jane Simmons' ability to demonstrate that sometimes when you least expect it, you may meet the friend of a lifetime.  Perfect for children 3 to 7.

Recommended this month (for fluent readers)

Journey to the River Sea .   Ibbotson has outdone herself, departing from fantasy novels to one of intrigue and adventure. With the memorable characters and plot twists she brings to her best-selling fantasies, Eva Ibbotson has written a hair-raising novel, set in turn-of-the-last-century Brazil.   This is a grand adventure story for children, ages 11-15.

In honor of National Poetry Month we are featuring...

Some From The Moon And Some From The Sun .   I can think of no better way to introduce young children to the fun and beauty of poetry than this book. You need not be a long standing admirer of Margot Zemach to feel the warmth that emanates from each page. Written posthumously, her family and editors took great care in gathering an exquisitely memorable book. They succeeded beautifully!

Reading Tip from Hedgie:

I often receive email from teachers asking asking about the importance of reading aloud to their students.  I'd like to share with you what the research shows.  First and foremost, reading aloud provides an invaluable emotional bond between teacher (or parent) and student.  If expression is used (and it should be) the student also falls in love with the spoken voice, which translates into better public speaking.  In addition, the listener is absorbing higher vocabulary words which leads to better grammar, spelling and writing skills.   In a nutshell, I believe that the single most valuable thing teachers can do for their students is to demonstrate a passion for books and share them with their students.

Great Books for me too?

Research has proven how important it is to model reading to children. Now
at Hedgehog Books we've made that even easier. Check out our
Techie's Grown-up Books Page .

Big Cherry Holler .  This is the sequel to Big Stone Gap - be sure to read this first if you haven't.  These books are about the indomitable 'town spinster' (in a small Appalachian town), who searches for love, happiness, and answers among the quirky local residents.  These are laugh out loud books that entertain and charm us as we see bits of ourselves in the heroine and her compatriots.
