Hedgie's Cash for Schools: We recently launched Hedgie's Cash for Schools. We saw that other programs only paid schools 1-2% of purchases (after administrative fees), so we have set up a program where any purchases you make from www.hedgehogbooks.com will pay 10% to the school or district of your choice - with no administrative fees. For more information on how to sign up your school, click here.

Za-Za's Baby Brother
What an adorable child-friendly board book! Priceless bright illustrations of a family in transition (now that the baby has arrived) and childlike hand-drawn text to boot...what more could you want? Our test audience laughed at the illustrations and rooted for Za Za and her many attempts to get attention. Perfect for ages 2 - 5.

Epossumondas
Three cheers for great storytellers! Renowned storyteller Coleen Salley and Caldecott Honor illustrator Janet Stevens team up for this outrageous twist on the Southern story of the noodlehead (Epposumondas) who takes everything much too literally. The illustrations are completely hysterical... Our test audience squealed at the sight of the diaper-wearing Epossumondas! A wonderful read-aloud for ages 3 - 8.
Recommended this month (For Fluent Readers)
The Canine Connection
Varied in tone and setting, this collection will make older readers smile, cry, and keep turning the pages to see what happens in each new miniworld of real and imagined encounters. This book is different than your usual collection of dog stories. In this, Betsy Hearne has used dogs not so much as equal characters, but as the provokers of change...through whose actions teens are forced to think and grow. Just perfect for ages 11 - 15.
Reading Tip From Hedgie
Make sure your child has access to nonfiction reading material. I suggest discovering what s/he is interested in, and then find several books and children's magazines on that topic. (You'll be amazed at how well children adapt to different reading material if they are fascinated by the subject!) The effort you put in will foster a love of learning...and will show your child that you respect and value his/her interests.

Great Books for Me Too?
Research has proven how important it is
to model reading to children. At Hedgehog Books we've made that even easier. Check out our
Techie's Grown-up Books Page.
Getting Mother's Body I've always liked books told from different perspectives. When each of the characters tells his/her side, we not only get a better view of reality, we also get to know the character, and, each character takes on more importance. In Getting Mother's Body, we see a story told by each of the members of an extended, poor black family in 1963 rural Texas, and we see perspectives from every person they encounter. This is extremely well-done and creates an engaging tale that is quite subtle in its indictment of the politics and racism of the time, while taking us along on a treasure hunt that is critical to each of the family members.
Getting Mother's Body may not be action-packed, but is is a quick read and will keep you turning the pages to see what happens next. If you think the outcome is predictable, don't worry - you'll ultimately be surprised.

A Note to Teachers: We know you don't have much time, but if you get the inclination, we now welcome teacher reviews for all of our books. If Hedgie hasn't done a review, a teacher review will be selected at random to be the main review. Put in your two cents about what students should read! Just go to the book you want to review and Add A Teacher's Review (Note, you don't have to fill out the entire form - pick the sections that are right for your review).
Thinking of sending books as gifts? On our checkout form, we've added the option to include a short message to the recipient of the books.
