Our Featured Book this Month...

Left For Dead This is the story of the USS Indianapolis, the brave men who endured unimaginable horrors and somehow survived, and Hunter Scott, the boy whose history project finally changed history. In the words of Hunter Scott: "The past five years of my life have been a journey down a bumpy road with many jolts and upsets, but well worth every bump. My dad says you learn more about an individual's character after a defeat than after a win. I have learned that winners shake off the bumps, don't cast blame or make excuses, and continue down the road with their goals and destination intact. This journey I have made has allowed me to learn the true cost of freedom. Throughout American history, men and women have put their lives on the line, while losing friend and loved ones, to ensure that you and I and all Americans can enjoy liberty. Through my fight to exonerate the captain of the USS Indianapolis , I am trying to pay back at least a little bit of honor to some of the people who provided my freedom. I am trying to honor a group of veterans to whom honor is everything."

Reading Tip From Hedgie:

Parents sometimes ask if their child should read in bed, right before going to sleep. While it does seem logical to take advantage of that peaceful time after the stress of the day...and before drifting off to sleep, it is not the ideal situation for reading. Getting too comfy while reading (particularly reclining) sends a message to the heart to slow down. This translates into less oxygen reaching the brain, which leads to drowsiness. Studies show that children (and adults) read more and for longer, if seated in an upright position. In other words, lying down in bed is splendid for sleeping, but not the best place for reading.

The Secret Life of Bees This is a great book! It brings to life the changes in the South during the 1960's in face of the Civil Rights Act while simultaneously showing us the the growth of a 14-year old girl as she finds herself. Using the times as a backdrop, we see her understand her place and direction in the world as she also unravels the mystery of her past, her parents' relationship, and her mother's death.
