A Single Shard. This 2001 Newbery Award Winner is a riveting adventure set in twelfth-century Korea. Not only is this a marvelous story with well-drawn unforgettable characters, but it gives the reader a peek at a time and place not often illuminated. In addition, it reminds us all of the importance of perseverance, sacrifice, integrity, selflessness and community. For it is through these attributes Tree-ear is transformed...and so are we. I invite you to join this journey, where the course of human destiny could be determined by a single celadon shard.
In honor of Women's History Month we are featuring...
Every Girl Tells a Story This is a book for women of all ages, who will recognize the girls they once were and still can be. It is a book for fathers and mothers, who hear - but may not always listen to - what their daughters are saying. But most of all it is a book for girls, who will find themselves reflected in this joyous celebration of their complexity, depth, honesty, and glorious soaring optimism.
Reading Tip from Hedgie:
I cannot express strongly enough the importance that sustained silent reading (SSR) plays in your child's education. As a teacher, I have long recognized that not only does SSR expose children to situations outside their own world, but it improves spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and writing. And the more they do it, the more these skill areas improve! In fact, students who read silently each day for 20 minutes or longer, have far superior test scores than children who don't.
Take time to encourage your child to read silently each day!

Great Books for me too?
Research has proven how important it is to model reading to children. Now
at Hedgehog Books we've made that even easier. Check out our Techie's Grown-up Books Page.
A Fine Balance Before I finished the first page of this book, I knew I was on to something. The style appeared to be a cross of Dostoyevski and Dickens, rich, colorful, and intriguing. The historical backdrop of India with the diverse conflicts force four unlikely characters together. I savored this book and took my time reading it. However, I hesitated to put it on my Favorites list for a couple of weeks because ultimately the story and the history affected me so much. As long as you're not expecting a happy ending, read on. This is a superb piece of literature.
