Time For Bed . Children and adults alike recognize the importance of the nightly bedtime routine. A good book only adds to this experience. TIME FOR BED is a beautiful book to share with your child. It is quiet and reassuring. Children will marvel at the large paintings of animals (in particular the baby ones!) and the sense of peace throughout the book. Mem Fox's simple verse and Jane Dyer's warm, loving illustrations combine for a bedtime book that is sure to become a classic...and it makes me long for the time when my own children were small and I would snuggle in bed and read to them!

http://www.hedgehogbooks.com/database/thumbnails/0689845065.gif Giggle, Giggle, Quack . In this hilarious companion to the Caldecott Honor book CLICK, CLACK MOO: COWS THAT TYPE, Farmer Brown leaves his brother, Bob, in charge while he goes on vacation. He gives Bob detailed notes of what to do, and warns him, "But keep an eye on Duck. He's trouble." Bob follows the notes exactly -- not realizing that Duck has rewritten them -- so he orders pizza with anchovies (the hens' favorite) on pizza night, lets the cows choose the movie on movie night, and uses Farmer Brown's good towels on the pigs' bath night. Our test audience LOVED following Duck and his pencil throughout the story...chuckling all the way! This is a marvelously fun story to share with children 4 to 8.

Recommended this month (for fluent readers)

http://www.hedgehogbooks.com/database/thumbnails/0689851243.gif The Year of Miss Agnes . This is one of those books that strikes deep in the heart of the reader. It's the story of a very special teacher who transforms everything around her...especially her students. It's also an inspirational story about looking past what you see in front of you, and imagining and working hard to create something good for yourself and those around you. Hooray for all the Miss Agneses out there! This is a great book to read aloud to students at the beginning of the school year, and makes a wonderful read-alone as well. It's suitable for children 9 to 11.

Reading Tip from Hedgie:

Parents sometimes ask if their child should read in bed, right before going to sleep. While it does seem logical to take advantage of that peaceful time after the stress of the day...and before drifting off to sleep, it is not the ideal situation for reading. Getting too comfy while reading (particularly reclining) sends a message to the heart to slow down. This translates into less oxygen reaching the brain, which leads to drowsiness. Studies show that children (and adults) read more and for longer, if seated in an upright position. In other words, lying down in bed is splendid for sleeping, but not the best place for reading.

Great Books for Me Too?

Research has proven how important it is to model reading to children. Now
at Hedgehog Books we've made that even easier. Check out our
Techie's Grown-up Books Page .

http://www.hedgehogbooks.com/database/thumbnails/0375726403.gif Empire Falls . This is Russo's best book to date. No wonder he won the Pulitzer Prize for it. This is a humorous, touching tale about a small Maine factory town which is in decline. It wisely examines marital relationships, father-daughter relationships, and social stratification. It has mystery, romance and dramatic growth of all its characters and is truly a pleasure to ready. Techie declares it one of the best books he's read in years!
