Can't You Sleep, Little Bear?
In this tender account of a sleepless night in the Bear Cave, Big Bear sets out with all his patience and understanding to put an end to Little Bear's bedtime fears. Lighting first a teeny-weeny lantern, then a bigger one, and finally "the Biggest Lantern of Them All," Big Bear tries his best to chase away the darkness. This is a beautiful anniversary edition of a classic bedtime book, which touches on the themes of bedtime rituals, patience, love and understanding. And did I mention the outstanding and often humorous illustrations? This one is definitely a keeper! For ages 2 to 5.

A Story For Bear
Here's one for the reader in all of us! When a young bear finds a scrap of an old letter, he is so curious about the mysterious marks that he searches out their source - a cabin in the woods. There he meets a young woman and is mesmerized by the sound of her voice. Though he cannot understand her words, he returns every day to hear the woman's stories of sailors, goddesses, and far-off lands. Dennis Haseley's inspired fantasy about the magic of friendship will enchant any child who has ever been read to. Illuminated by Jim LaMarche's illustrations, A STORY FOR A BEAR celebrates the wonders of reading. For ages 5 and up.

Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH
This book is a timeless Newbery-winning classic, and should be a part of every child's library. On the surface, it is a story about a resourceful and brave mother mouse doing all she can to save her child, and in the process, befriending a brilliant group of rodents with an amazing past. Looking beyond the superficial meaning, this story raises big questions. Is technology contributing to the increased laziness of mankind? What are the burdens that accompany high intelligence?
This is a wonderful story that is cleverly constructed and gripping to the very end. I read this every year with my students and they always love it. Highly recommended. For ages 10 to 13.
Our Featured Book this Month...
This Place I Know: Poems of Comfort
In September 2001, New York poetry anthologist Georgia Heard was asked to compile a collection of "poems of comfort" for schoolchildren in lower Manhattan. Soon afterward, a number of well-known artists were approached to ask if they would be interested in participating. Within weeks, no fewer than eighteen artists had agreed to volunteer their talents to illustrate one poem each. The result is this unprecedented volume of life-affirming verse that is as richly diverse as it is powerful, as beautiful as it is full of heart.
Reading Tip From Hedgie
Now is the time to be a great role model for your children...Get caught reading a book! Studies show that children who have parents who read for pleasure are more likely to do well in school. Go out of your way to have your child observe you choosing and reading a book. Comment on it every so often...say, at the dinner table. So often adults probe their children for information about school and what they're reading, and children are asked to discuss books they have read in the form of book reports. It's wonderful for them to hear YOU share your thoughts and impressions of the book you are reading. This is the ultimate role model!

Great Books for Me Too?
Research has proven how important it is
to model reading to children. Now
at Hedgehog Books we've made that even easier. Check out our
Techie's Grown-up Books Page .
Little Altars Everywhere This is the book that preceeded The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood. It presents even-handed accounts of the lives of each of the members of the family. I strongly recommend this book and suggest you read it after its sequel, The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood. In some ways it is more a collection of related short stories than it is a novel, and some of them are extremely powerful. I think you'll be touched and frequently moved by the accounts of each character.
