Hedgie's Cash for Schools: We recently launched Hedgie's Cash for Schools. We saw that other programs only paid schools 1-2% of purchases (after administrative fees), so we have set up a program where any purchases you make from www.hedgehogbooks.com will pay 10% to the school or district of your choice - with no administrative fees. I Love My Mama
This sweet rhyme follows Mama and Baby elephant as they take a walk together through the savannah. From splashing together in a cool river and drying themselves in the warm sun to telling stories while they watch the stars fill the night sky, every moment of Mama and Baby's day is filled with fun and caring. Perfect for little ones, ages 1 to 4.

Big Day on the River
Willie can't wait to take her raft out on the river for the first time. Her loving relatives want her to have a wonderful trip, so they load the raft with everything she might need: watermelon and lemonade, sun umbrellas and warm blankets, and even a camp stove. You guessed it: There's hardly enough room for Willie! A marvelous (and funny!) read-aloud for children 4 to 8.

Fever 1793
Laurie Halse Anderson based her novel on the true events surrounding a yellow fever epidemic that devastated Philadelphia in 1793. Not only will readers be holding onto the edge of their seats in this page-turner, they will learn what life was like for some Americans not long after the Revolutionary War. Everyday events for common people, including freed Africans, are described with vivid description. And once the fever hits the city, we see Mattie's strength, cleverness, and quick-thinking - a great heroine. A terrific historical fiction book for ages 11-15.
Reading Tip From Hedgie
It's soon to be that time again...BACK TO SCHOOL! As the new school year starts, I encourage you all to make reading a priority for your children. Read aloud every day, and for older children, make sure they set time aside each day to read. As teachers, we would really appreciate having children arrive at school reading as well or better than they did at the end of the last school year - we can spend less time on review... So, with only a few weeks to go, make a bit of a push with your children. Get them reading!

Great Books for Me Too?
Research has proven how important it is
to model reading to children. At Hedgehog Books we've made that even easier. Check out our

Probable Future I've always appreciated Alice Hoffman's ability to interweave the joys and sorrows of the real world with something a bit more spiritual - perhaps even supernatural. This helps us cherish all aspects of life. In Probable Future, Hoffman has created a masterpiece. She explores a complex mother-daughter-granddaughter relationship where the characters are part of a long line of extraordinary women. Each has a 'gift' and must struggle to use and understand it in terms of the people around her but even more with each other. I found myself continually touched in scene after scene.
The book brings out all that is good and many of the challenges we face in life's relationships - not only with each other but with the 'natural world.' I tend to reserve certain words of praise, but in this case, I can say that Probable Future is one of the best books I've ever read. I strongly recommend it!

A Note to Teachers: We know you don't have much time, but if you get the inclination, we now welcome teacher reviews for all of our books. If Hedgie hasn't done a review, a teacher review will be selected at random to be the main review. Put in your two cents about what students should read! Just go to the book you want to review and Add A Teacher's Review (Note, you don't have to fill out the entire form - pick the sections that are right for your review).
Thinking of sending books as gifts? On our checkout form, we've added the option to include a short message to the recipient of the books.
