A Note to Teachers: We know you don't have much time, but if you get the inclination, we now welcome teacher reviews for all of our books. If Hedgie hasn't done a review, a teacher review will be selected at random to be the main review. Put in your two cents about what students should read! Just go to the book you want to review and Add A Teacher's Review.
Thinking of sending books as gifts? On our checkout form, we've added the option to include a short message to the recipient of the books.

We're Going on a Bear Hunt
Our test audience actually squealed with delight when they saw the enclosed bear. He's really that cute! This is a delightful interpretation of a favorite action chant-aloud, one that is one of the best-loved picture books for young children...and the illustrations are positively priceless!
One note: This is not a REAL bear hunt, and there are no guns anywhere...just a playful family with a powerful imagination, out for a stroll. What fun! Perfect for little ones, ages 1-6.

Where Does Joe Go?
This book is such a delightful surprise! After reading this one aloud to two different groups of children, we knew we had a winner in our hands. (How fun it was for the children to predict the whereabouts of Joe!) Old bearded Joe is a regular in the community, selling delectable goodies at his popular snack shop from spring to fall. But each year when the weather turns crisp, Joe boards up the shop and leaves town. Can you guess where he goes? A highly original Christmas book for young readers, ages 3-7.
Recommended this month (For Fluent Readers)
Puppies, Dogs and Blue Northers
I'm a sucker for a good dog story, and this one is at the top of my list....but I am not alone! It's an ALA Best Book for Young Adults and a Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year. An experienced Iditarod racer, Gary Paulsen writes with experience and love...a reflective essay on his lead dog (and member of the family), Cookie. Combining adventure, humor and tragedy, this is one heck of a great read! Ideal for fluent readers ages 11 to adult.

Peace Like A River This is one of the best books I've read this year. The prose runs from leisurely to fast-paced, from poetic to edgy, and the story is one of family, faith, loyalty and miracles. What a remarkable debut novel!
This is the story of a single father who raises his three children, an honorable teenager, the every-boy pre-teen brother, and the genius younger sister. When the oldest boy is arrested for defending the family and then escapes from jail, the family takes off in pursuit. We see that what appears to be good isn't always so and that the bad, often isn't. The characters are fascinating and self-defined, and their interactions reflect the family loyalties we all wish we had.
