Recommended this month (for little ones)
Humphrey's Corner Humphrey and his favorite toy, Mop, are looking for a place to play. They set off to find somewhere cozy and interesting, but nothing seems quite right. Then Mommy comes to help, and Humphrey and Mop find a warm, secret place that is just perfect. Humphrey's Corner introduces an endearing character who will remind readers of their own favorite toddlers, and will remind toddlers of their own cozy, interesting places. And the mother is ever present as a reminder of the security of home. This is a lovely book with soft illustrations, ideal for reading to your favorite little one.
Recommended this month (for early readers)
The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins Can you fathom a time when almost no one in the world knew what a dinosaur looked like? That was true in the mid-nineteenth century, until a Victorian artist named Waterhouse Hawkins brought these ancient animals to life for all to see. From the youngest dinosaur aficionados to those interested in art, or pioneering people, the unforgettable story of Waterhouse Hawkins and his dinosaurs had something to teach all of us about the importance of believing in oneself and following a dream.
Recommended this month (for fluent readers)
Any Small Goodness is a tremendously moving story about a loving Chicano family in East L.A. It's filled with love, hope, and the exquisite beauty of a very special community. In the words of the book: "What a place is this barrio." I nearly spit the words across the room."Mijo." With carino , Papi touches my shoulders and looks into my face. The world seems to wait while he arranges his thoughts. Then suddenly he says, "In life there is bueno and there is malo. If you do not find enough of the good, you must yourself create it." A big speech for him. And I can tell he's not done. After a moment he says, "Remember this thing - any small goodness is of value."
Book Series of the Month...The Chronicles of Narnia!
The Lion, The Witch and the Wardobe Written over 50 years ago, THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE holds the high honor of being included in the 'One Hundred Books That Shaped the Century', from the School Library Journal. It was the first book in the series by C.S. Lewis...the prequel THE MAGICIAN'S NEPHEW was actually written 6 years later. THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE stands alone as a superb fantasy where talking animals are believable, the action is plentiful, and it is up to the children to save Narnia from the evil witch and her perpetual winter.
Reading Tip from Hedgie:
We have many parents and teachers who contact us for recommendations for books for young advanced readers. The goal is to find APPROPRIATE books for the age of the child. The difficulty is to find advanced books that don't overwhelm young minds with either inappropriate content (often sexual), or contain concepts that are intellectually beyond them. Your challenge as a parent/teacher is to investigate and ask questions about the books you are interested in choosing. In other words, just because a child CAN read the words, does not make the book a good choice. Do a little research first...you'll be glad you did!

Books for me too???
Research has proven how important it is to model reading to children. Now at Hedgehog Books we're making that even easier. When you check out, just click on "Yes, Show me the Grownup Books". You can also get there through links at the bottom of our home page or by clicking here. As much as we love children's books, we know there's nothing like curling up with a good book of our very own! Our Grown-up books have been hand selected by our techie, who if not working on the computer, is reading a book. No kidding! For this month, he recommends reading Skipping Christmas. In this charming fable, John Grisham tells the story of one couple's hilarious attempt to escape Christmas, only to be forced by friends and family to rediscover the true meaning of the season.
