Recommended this month (for little ones)

Waiting for Wings Every spring, butterflies emerge and dazzle the world with their vibrant beauty. But where do butterflies come from? How are they born? What do they eat-and how? With a simple, rhyming text and glorious color-drenched collage, Lois Ehlert provides clear answers to these and other questions as she follows the life cycle of four common butterflies, from their beginnings as tiny hidden eggs and hungry caterpillars to their transformation into full-grown butterflies. Don't be surprised if your children want to make their very own butterfly garden!

Recommended this month (for early readers)

The Water Hole is a stunning fusion of counting book, puzzle book, storybook, and art book- all within a timeless, life-affirming theme. Get ready for an exhilarating journey of discovery, from the plains of Africa and the jungles of the Amazon to the woodlands of North America and the deserts of outback Australia. Can anything bring back the water that the animals all need to survive? (The shrinking water hole will transfix young and old alike.) This is Graeme Base at his finest. WOW!

Recommended this month (for fluent readers)

Fair Weather In this dazzling tour de force, Richard Peck combines the fictional Beckett family with some of the era's most fascinating real people - including Buffalo Bill himself - for a whirlwind of humor, misadventure, and charms beyond measure. In addition, there is an author's note at the end of the book explaining the many events and discoveries that were to happen as a result of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. It actually had me saying out loud, "Wow! Listen to this..." to anyone within earshot. This book is an absolute gem!

In Honor of Black History Month...and Peace Everywhere!

The Other Side is an outstanding introduction to the Civil Rights Movement. Young Clover has always wondered why a fence separates the black side of town from the white side. But this summer when Annie, a white girl from the other side, begins to sit on the fence, Clover grows more curious about the reason why the fence is there and about the daring girl who sits on it, rain or shine. And one day, feeling very brave, Clover approaches Annie.

Reading Tip from Hedgie:

This month's tip is about "just in case" books. These are books you bring along just in case you have time on your hands (dentist, sister in dressing room, traffic jam, emergency picnic...). I heartily suggest that:

1. Parents... keep a good anthology in the car, such as You Read To Me & I'll Read To You. You never know how your day will unfold.

2. Teachers... place a good grade level appropriate read-aloud in with your classroom emergency supplies (backpack, outdoor container...). I have spoken with several teachers who claim that reading aloud made students and teachers calmer during the Loma Prieta Earthquake of 1989.

Pack a 'just in case' book today!

Don't You Just Love Those Book Reports?!

Our grade level reading lists can help you and your children choose the right books.

Great Books for me too???

The Bonesetter's Daughter. (Now in paperback!)

I love good historical novels, and this is one of the best. Not only do we get a wonderful perspective on the evolution of recent Chinese culture and the effects of the cultural revolution, we get to see its impact on a modern Chinese-American woman and her pre-conceived notions about her family. History and enlightenment in one book is hard to beat! Other grownup books!

Have you got a question for Hedgie?
Don't forget our "
Ask a Teacher" page. Hedgie's professional teaching staff is there to answer all of your literary questions. This month we answered questions ranging from an 8th grader needing guidance for a science experiment...to a mom's request for appropriate books for her child who reads far beyond grade level. Come check out the latest posts or add your own. Hedgie loves to help!
