Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird became an instant classic when it was first published in 1960, and won the Pulitzer Prize soon after. Taking place in the fictitious town of Maycomb, Alabama, the tale progresses during three years of the Great Depression. It's the story of a middle-aged lawyer assigned to defend a black man who's been charged with the rape of a white girl. The story is told by 8-year-old Scout Finch, and revolves around her brother, Jem, and their widowed father, Atticus, the lawyer in question. Though Lee's themes are familiar--race, class, justice, prejudice, hypocrisy and coming of age--what makes the novel so unforgettable is the author's uncanny ability to see the world from the perspective of a child.
