Quack and Count
With merry rhyming couplets, little listeners embark upon a charming math experience, starring seven adorable ducklings! On each page, the math sentence changes, as the ducklings find themselves in different situations. An added plus is the search for three tiny ladybugs at the flip of each page. This one gets picked up time and again by young and old alike...a BIG HIT! Here's an adorable board book with a clever math twist...perfect to read to little ones, ages 1 to 5.

Under the Quilt of Night
Deborah Hopkinson and James E. Ransome team up again, in this stunning companion to Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt. Ransome's rich, powerful illustrations elicit all the emotion and suspense of Hopkinson's words, in a story that's sure to make your heart race and leave you breathless. The book closes with "A note about the story," in which the author explains more about the Underground Railroad. UNDER THE NIGHT QUILT is an outstanding introduction to a very dark time in our history. Here's a great book to share with children, ages 5 to 10.

The River Between Us
Not surprisingly, this is a finalist for the 2003 National Book Award. Within a page-turning tale of mystery, adventure, and the female Civil War experience, Richard Peck has spun a breathtaking portrait of the lifelong impact that one person can have on another. This is a novel of countless riches. Here's a highly recommended historical novel, for ages 12 and up.
Reading Tip From Hedgie
Having problems broaching certain topics with your children? Sometimes it's hard to bring up an issue which they find personal or want to avoid talking about. Try selecting a fictional book that revolves around the topic. For younger children, read it to them and discuss how the characters deal with the issues. For teenagers, have them read the book and discuss it over dinner. This can be an easy way to keep those communication doors open!

Great Books for Me Too?
Research has proven how important it is
to model reading to children. At Hedgehog Books we've made that even easier. Check out our

The Fortress of Solitude If you were a comic book fan, you know that the Fortress of Solitude was Superman's private retreat somewhere in an arctic wasteland. In his novel, Jonathan Lethem spins a tale of racial tension and an unusual friendship that springs up between two misfits growing up in a racially divided Brooklyn neighborhood. There's history, music, and magic against a bleak backdrop that tests what true friendship means as it changes through a lifetime.

A Note to Teachers: We know you don't have much time, but if you get the inclination, we now welcome teacher reviews for all of our books. If Hedgie hasn't done a review, a teacher review will be selected at random to be the main review. Put in your two cents about what students should read! Just go to the book you want to review and Add A Teacher's Review (Note, you don't have to fill out the entire form - pick the sections that are right for your review).
Thinking of sending books as gifts? On our checkout form, we've added the option to include a short message to the recipient of the books.
