About Us

Vanya

Vanya
Vanya Jackowski, founder and CEO of Hedgehog Books, comes from a long line of story-tellers and enthusiastic readers. She has spent the past 20 years collecting (and reading!) children's books. Her interest in reading aloud began with the birth of her children, but she is best known for reading aloud to her students. Vanya is thrilled to spread her knowledge of great books through Hedgehog Books.

Vanya has taught elementary and middle-school children for the past 10 years. She mentors new teachers, and has helped her district establish math and social studies programs. She lives with her family in Northern California.

Vanya Maureen
Maureen Medeiros has been an upper-elementary teacher since 1993. Her mother, who also was a teacher, taught her how to read at a young age and Maureen has been an avid reader ever since. She enjoys seeing 9-12 year-olds benefit from the powerful perspectives and knowledge that excellent literature can provide.

Maureen earned her Bachelors Degree in English and her Masters Degree in Education at UCLA. In addition to teaching, she has been involved with her district's language arts and technology committees, and has helped train new teachers. She lives in Northern California.

Lavonne
In addition to her standard teaching credential, Lavonne Marafino has resource specialist, learning handicapped, and adult education credentials. Lavonne brings Hedgehog over 30 years of experience in special education, child advocacy and advisement, and diagnosis and remediation. She is also a Linda Mood-Belle specialist.

She lives in Saratoga, California with her husband.

Kristen
Kristen
Kristen White Barrett, a Hedgehog Books founder, has been in the field of education since 1989. She has been an avid reader for most of her life and credits her first grade teacher for her love of books. Kristen has been a teacher in both the intermediate and primary grades and has seen how children of all ages can appreciate and benefit from hearing the written word aloud.

Kristen has her Masters Degree in Education, as well as her school counseling credential. She lives in Northern California with her husband, Ryan, in a home filled with books.
